Natürlich fällt mir die lade runter, schläft mir das gesicht ein, etc, etc. wenn ich hier um 12.15 bei meinem frühstück sitze und mir die österreichischen wahlergebnisse ansehe. ich kann nicht sagen, dass mich das überrascht - je komplexer die welt desto einfacher müssen wohl die parolen sein. je größer der wohlstand umso leichter ist es, ängste vor verlust zu schüren.
ich überlege mir gerade wie ich die parteienstruktur und das wahlergebnis hier erkläre und vor allem im hinblick auf die strukturen und verhältnisse, die diese ergebnisse überhaupt zulassen, als ganz grossartig rühmen muss - wir haben ja schießlich noch die wahl zwischen 6 parteien (und ein paar zerquetschten). dass sich diese eher im rechtskonservativen spektrum versammeln als links von der mitte ist eine andere sache, aber sicher nicht ein frage des verhältnisses. Ich war gestern höchst erstaunt und perplex bei einer hollywood-rockmusic-party jemand sagen zu hören: "I vote for MacCain 'cos I don't want the commies in this country." da blieb mir auch das lachen eher im hals stecken.
Und natürlich bedeutet das ergebnis nichts gutes für die kulturpolitik, aber das ist wiederum etwas, dass mich hier sehr beschäftigt - warum gibt es bei uns so etwas wie kulturpolitik und hier nicht (oder wie sieht die hier aus - präsent ist sie jedenfalls nicht sehr....)? was sind die unterschiedlichen konzepte, die dahinter stecken (kann ich da auch mal über vor- und nachteile abseits von selbstverständlichkeiten nachdenken?).
Das andere, das mich nachdenken lässt, ist dieser satz von Virginia Woolf: "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." ich denke da nämlich immer mehr an klassenverhältnisse als an feminist issues und gender-inequalities (hoffentlich heisst das jetzt so?!), aber dazu komm ich noch ein andermal.
In zeiten wie diesen muss die Heidegger'sche gelassenheit auf jeden fall in den wind geblasen werden; es gilt, sich zu organisieren.

Car Parts

Besides my ongoing antipathy against private property obsession and limitations to your personal freedom to intoxicate yourself with nicotine (I was refused in buying cigarettes at the supermarket because I didn't have a valid ID with my size and weight on it!!) I know what I like about the city - that it has this kind if southern/mediterranean style in dealing with things. For me it is a relief to see that at the auto repair they're doing their business in a very improvised and laid back style (but not lacking the necessary ernsthaftigkeit, of course). It's more like "ok, we can replace your ABS-brake system with a new one, that costs you a fortune but I can also build in a used one, that I will get tomorrow from a friend of a friend. And if you'll have the oil change and the coolant fix, I 'll fix the lights for free!" (as you see I am now nearly an expert on car parts...). The we-can-negotiate-on-this and oh-you're-friends-with (Natascha in that case) and not-from-the-US style is a welcome contrast to the proper/clean/grid-like structure that crosses and covers the rest of the city. And I don't dare to call this subversive (but I would love to though). This feeling is there every time I ride the bus and when being in Echo Park more than in Silverlake and also the other day when I went to downtown and there was a street market in front of the public library full of stalls selling empanadas, kebabs and aguas frescas.

Ah ja, and somebody asked me recently to post more naked shoulders on this blog, but I can only do a leg for now (perfect match- female body parts and car stuff ;-) - it's a fragment but at the moment I have the feeling that I have to assemble myself allover again....

and I am not talking "Freiwillige Feuerwehr"..... : a fellow student (undergrad) replied yesterday to the question why she has choosen a class that deals with spatial theory and gender issues: "Well I thought I could give it a try as it is not only dealing with feminist theory. That always felt very awkward to me as all my friends getting involved with feminism started neglecting their hygiene."
Young lady, I may still shave my legs, but look at my car!!!
(I nearly had to leave the room 'cos I couldn't stop laughing, however I thought it was very brave to tell us that or amazingly naive...)

And while there's a debate around lipstick and sexism here, I am amused by the schlagzeile in Der Standard "Martin Kusej: Habe ein Herz für die Frauen-Emanzipation". Gönnerhaft. Grossartig.
Proof that a certain gender doesn't ensure feminist thoughts. Works in both ways, ha ha ha ...
