On the list at Silverlake Lounge

Went there, saw a concert. Three girls, playing drums, bass and guitar (the singer). The sound was really bad, sometimes they were a bit uncoordinated but they had fun. And first I thought: uh classic situation, three girls on stage and a lot of middle-aged men in the audience, but then they REALLY had fun and were playing the thin line between mocking rock-poses and in fact rocking out. The drummer is 20 and she was in such a relaxed mood that all the boy bands that I know könnten sich ein stückerl abschneiden. My friend Drew had her picture taken by a photographer (in fact a photographing couple) who said that she looked exactly like their friend Linda back in those days (which were the 1970ies I suppose). Then they reflected on the fact that there seemed to be a younger generation dressing (and looking) exactly like they did.
Right, I call it "retro", but what does it mean? A feeling of comfort, of security (moment? ölkrise, vietnam-krieg?), a time of political grass-roots movements (and they made sense), no gender-bending? oder doch? no androgynity, but effeminated men? And that we are completely out of ideas for the 2000s (I learned yesterday that they are called the odds ;-)
Anyway, morgen kommen dann die thirty-somethings dran! Oh yeah, and I was on the list! Und ja, ich finds cool, ich geb's zu.

More blogging

lovely miss rife and me did it again:

See our weekly photoblog on cultural oddities posted by two expats in Los Angeles and Vienna. Located in the realm of appearances, utterly subjective and, of course, queer.

mirror=stage #3: have you ever seen a helicopter crossing your table?

The best

... chocolate ice-cream I ever had! As you see it hides under a mountain of vanilla with crunchy caramel bits (that is also quite decent). Pazzo gelato per la pazza claudia!

99 degrees fahrenheit

I wonder where this comes from and wish for a thunderstorm – but as you know: It never rains in southern california!

state of nature ...

Car Parts

Besides my ongoing antipathy against private property obsession and limitations to your personal freedom to intoxicate yourself with nicotine (I was refused in buying cigarettes at the supermarket because I didn't have a valid ID with my size and weight on it!!) I know what I like about the city - that it has this kind if southern/mediterranean style in dealing with things. For me it is a relief to see that at the auto repair they're doing their business in a very improvised and laid back style (but not lacking the necessary ernsthaftigkeit, of course). It's more like "ok, we can replace your ABS-brake system with a new one, that costs you a fortune but I can also build in a used one, that I will get tomorrow from a friend of a friend. And if you'll have the oil change and the coolant fix, I 'll fix the lights for free!" (as you see I am now nearly an expert on car parts...). The we-can-negotiate-on-this and oh-you're-friends-with (Natascha in that case) and not-from-the-US style is a welcome contrast to the proper/clean/grid-like structure that crosses and covers the rest of the city. And I don't dare to call this subversive (but I would love to though). This feeling is there every time I ride the bus and when being in Echo Park more than in Silverlake and also the other day when I went to downtown and there was a street market in front of the public library full of stalls selling empanadas, kebabs and aguas frescas.

Ah ja, and somebody asked me recently to post more naked shoulders on this blog, but I can only do a leg for now (perfect match- female body parts and car stuff ;-) - it's a fragment but at the moment I have the feeling that I have to assemble myself allover again....
